{"id":431,"date":"2018-02-12T03:50:37","date_gmt":"2018-02-12T03:50:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/groundup.cdu.edu.au\/?page_id=431"},"modified":"2018-02-12T07:03:45","modified_gmt":"2018-02-12T07:03:45","slug":"indigenous-knowledge-and-resource-management-in-northern-australia","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/groundup.cdu.edu.au\/index.php\/indigenous-knowledge-and-resource-management-in-northern-australia\/","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous Knowledge and Resource Management in Northern Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Funding:<\/strong>\u00a0Australian Research Council Linkage Grant<\/p>\n<p><strong>Duration: <\/strong>Sept 2003 \u2013 Dec 2006<\/p>\n<p><strong>Location:\u00a0<\/strong>Darwin, East Arafura, Northeast Arnhemland<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdu.edu.au\/centres\/ik\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Visit project website<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Project partners:<\/strong> Northern Land Council (NLC) including Northern Australian Indigenous Land Sea Management Alliance NAILSMA, the Northern Territory Department of Infrastructure Planning and Environment (NTDIPE) including NT Museum, and the Yothu Yindi Foundation (YYF) including the Garma Cultural Studies Institute (GSCI).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Summary: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0research began with an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdu.edu.au\/centres\/ik\/IKaudit.html\">audit of databases<\/a>\u00a0which claim to contain Indigenous knowledge of Northern Australia which revealed the existence of many such databases almost none of which were ever made use of either by Indigenous or non-Indigenous users.<\/p>\n<p>This led to working with several indigenous groups to research which sorts of software and hardware solutions these groups valued in mking and managing collective memory.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdu.edu.au\/centres\/ik\/databases.html\">Emerging solutions<\/a>\u00a0include products valued by some\u00a0 Larrakia people, the Garma Cultural Studies Institute, by a group at Kapulwarnamyo, East of the Arafura Swamp, among others.
